Monday Motivation: 10.5.26: Duane the Macabre

Mark 9:21-24 NIV

21 Jesus asked the boy’s father, “How long has he been like this?”

“From childhood,” he answered. 22 “It has often thrown him into fire or water to kill him. But if you can do anything, take pity on us and help us.”

23 “‘If you can’?” said Jesus. “Everything is possible for one who believes.”

24 Immediately the boy’s father exclaimed, “I do believe; help me overcome my unbelief!”

Where do you need help with unbelief in your life?

To believe in a better future does not require the absence of doubt. You can hold both at the same time, and that is enough.

This story encouraged me as I think about my own journey of building my business. Really, it's less about building a business and more about rebuilding myself.

Every great new adventure in your life will require you to kill the old version of yourself so you can be made new.

Which forces me to ask: what is the proper way to kill your previous self?

Should it be quick and sudden? Does it happen over time? If so, how long?

If it were my choice, I'd want it to be sudden. That seems like the most compassionate route. What I have seen, though, is that most people torture themselves for years as they try to get rid of their old selves.

This may be why life feels so hard for you right now. You're extending your death and thereby delaying your rebirth.

A torturous killing of your old self is slow, drawn out, and full of repeated traumas. In real life, that looks like the endless planning, the delayed action, and the constant comparisons you make before you finally get on with it.

A humane killing of your old self is sudden and quick. It's a simple declaration, an "I am ..." statement backed by the belief and desire you have in that moment.

Look at the father again. He didn't wait for his doubt to leave before he spoke. He said "I do believe" immediately, doubt and all.

The moment you say you are someone else, it is done. No fuss. No frills. Just done.

I didn't think I'd wake up today telling you to be better murderers, but here we are. Don't extend your suffering. Get on with it.
