Monday Motivation: 11.2.26 - Doing What You Should Do

Two simple ideas landed on me this past month, and together they made me sit down and consider a new approach to life.

The first came from a legendary advisor who wanted to pour into what I’ve been building with my business. His wisdom was five words: “Do everything you think you should do.”

He paused to let it sink in.

Then he explained. You know those moments when you think about something and say, “I should have done this,” or “I should do that”? Have fewer of those moments. Get in the habit of doing the things you think you should do, every time.

Simple advice. Profound if you take it seriously.

The second idea came from a book I’m reading, Strategy and the Fat Smoker. Its premise is that we already know what we should do. Doing it, consistently, is the hard part. Strategy, then, is nothing more than “devising ways to ensure that, compared to others, we actually do more of what everybody knows [they] should do.”

Put the two together and the path to a successful day gets short. All we have to do is answer one question and then act on it:

“Of the things I know I should do to be successful, what will I do today?”

And once you have your answer, two bonus questions make it stick:

“How can I make this easy to do? How can I make it fun to do?”
