Revisiting Save the Last Dance's (Not So) Iconic Dance Scene
Life can be hard. We all need a respite from all that is going on in the world.
That’s why it is my pleasure to bring attention to this incredibly meh dance scene that was supposed to be the penultimate moment in a fondly remembered but bad movie.
Save the Last Dance had all of the making of an early 2000s film. Lots of leather, sequins, crop tops, baggy clothes, and braids on every race of person.
The Y2K era was weird.
It was the era of mashups and some executive at MTV asked, “What if we mixed ballet with hip-hop?” (They were probably the same person that thought to combine hip hop and opera, but that’s a story for another day).
Fast forward to the end of Save the Last Dance. Sara Johnson combines her understanding of ballet and “hip-hop” moves in order to wow at an audition for the most prestigious ballet school in the world, Julliard.
Here’s her audition…
There was a whole generation of people who though she was killing it when this came out (Editor note: she was not).
‘A’ for effort though. Enjoy the memories.
