Monday Motivation: 9.15.25 -The Simple Way to Start a Successful Small Business

💡
"All I want to know is where I'm going to die so I'll never go there." - Charlie Munger

An insight I recently shared with a small business owner was this:

Most small businesses that fail do so because of 1) charging too little, 2) focusing on too many things, or 3) trying to get things done cheaply instead of paying for great help.

1) Charging too little
Most business owners don’t charge enough. On the surface, they’re afraid to raise prices because they think clients will say no. But deep down, many hold back because they don’t believe they’re worth it. Price your work based on the value you’re bringing, not just the cost. Price as of a percentage of the value created plus what your time is worth to you to do that task.

2) Focusing on too many things
When you’re starting out, many business owners try to be all things to all people. You can’t. It’s also harder to market everything you do instead of the one thing you do best. Focus on where you make the most impact and lean into that as you’re starting out. You can expand as you grow.

3) Trying to get things done cheaply vs. paying for great help
You get what you pay for—and you often pay triple when you’re cheap. Cheap people pay once to get the job done, again to get it fixed, and a third time in the opportunity they lost spending extra time on it. If you have a great dream, you’ll need great help. When you’re operating outside your expertise, don’t skimp. Getting things done adds to your bottom line; getting things done well multiplies it.

These are just some insights I’ve learned the hard way. You can either read hundreds of books, make these mistakes yourself (as I and many others have), or avoid them and build something that changes the world. If you’re having trouble starting or scaling your dream, it’s probably because you’re doing one of these three things.

Your choice.
