How American Chinese Food Became Delivery Food

In 1976, a Chinese restaurateur named Misa Chang pioneered food delivery in America as we know it.

Chang opened her Manhattan restaurant, Empire Szechuan, in November. But she wasn’t attracting the dine-in business she wanted. So she printed hundreds of paper menus advertising free delivery and slid them under her neighbors’ doors in local apartment buildings.

Two hours later, she got her first order: wonton soup and an egg roll. She delivered the food herself and got a one dollar tip.

This early form of spam marketing helped make delivery the phenomenon it is today. Once delivery blew up for Chang, it became popular for other Chinese restaurants in New York, too. Then, other restaurants got in on it and the service spread to other cities from there.

This won the James Beard Award for best Audio Programing in 2022.
