Friday's Too Good Not to Share: 4.14.23

Every Friday, I share other great content (with some added context) to dive into over the weekend. These could be articles, podcasts, videos, Twitter threads, or other great newsletters.

In short, these are the most interesting of the interesting stuff I've come across.

Inside Donald Glover’s New Creative Playground

Some people appreciate Donald Glover for his genius. I appreciate his commitment to craft.

He just gives a crap about doing insanely good, high taste level work. After wrapping up the last season of his hit TV show Atlanta, he is now focused on building out Gilga. Gilga is his new production company/incubator/cultural library located on the farm he purchased in Ojai, CA.

He describes his new company as, “[...] Erewhon for culture,” he says, referring to the high-end California supermarket.

“I want to work with the best people in every medium. To work toward sustainable output. The culture we’re getting from our phones is not high quality. It can be really good sometimes. And fun. But not necessarily high quality. Gilga is the filter for all of that.”

A lofty ambition. Step inside the mind of Donald Glover here. [h/t GQ]

Max Tegmark: The Case for Halting AI Development | Lex Fridman Podcast #371

AI could be the end of us and everything else as we know it (not hyperbole). There are lots of different takes on AI but this is what I believe to be true at this  moment in history:

  • Today we are closer to artificial general intelligence (AGI) and super intelligence than anyone thought was possible
  • The speed of this development is happening faster than predicted
  • No one really knows the outcome, but there are two options: things get much better or things get much worse

Max dives deeper into why he's proposing a pause in AI development at this time so that our safety protocols have a chance catch up. He also breaks down how life works better than anyone else I've encountered.
